There are many myths and legends where Bellydancing is concerned.

Not many people know it, but actually Belly Dancing got its name from an American promoter of a show in Egypt in 1893. Nobody was showing an interest in coming, so he called the dancers “Bellydancers”. This did the trick, and audience numbers improved dramatically!

In the Middle East, women dance to entertain each other. They also dance to celebrate happy family occasions such as weddings.

Wearing a jewel in the navel is not traditional or authentic, the idea originated perhaps unsurprisingly in Hollywood.

Similarly, the coin bra and belt is not authentic dress for Middle Eastern women. However, today it is worn by many dancers - along with many other types of costumes. In fact there are no set rules when it comes to costume except in Egypt where dancers are required to cover their navels by law. It is unacceptable to dance revealing your stomach there.
